What is K53?

K53 is a defensive driving system designed to prevent or minimize potential road hazards, collisions with other road users (vehicles, pedestrians), and obstacles. The K53 driving test evaluates a new driver's ability in terms of vehicle handling, control, adherence to traffic laws, signs, signals, and markings, as well as their capacity to deal with traffic conditions and other driving challenges.

K53 Learning Modules

Module 1: Pre-trip Inspection (Exterior)

  1. Check under vehicle on approach for leaks, obstructions
  2. Unlock all doors
  3. Inspect vehicle for damage (top to bottom, left to right)
  4. Check right exterior mirror for damage and cleanliness
  5. Check right portion of windscreen for damage
  6. Check right wiper blade for wear and stability
  7. Check right front wheel: tire tread, sidewall, inflation
  8. Check right front lenses and reflector
  9. Check front of vehicle for damage and security
  10. Check front registration plate

Note: On approach to the vehicle, the examiner will request you to conduct a pre-trip exterior inspection before entering.

Module 2: Pre-trip Inspection (Interior)

  1. Ensure parking brake is applied
  2. Ensure gear lever is in neutral position
  3. Check for obstructions
  4. Check warning lights and gauges
  5. Adjust seat for correct driving position
  6. Adjust all mirrors for maximum visibility
  7. Turn ignition to "on" without starting engine
  8. Check electric windows operation
  9. Check lights, indicators, horn, and wipers
  10. Switch ignition off and return all switches to "off"

Note: Items 1-2 and 5-6 must be checked in sequence.

Module 3: Starting Procedure (Manual Transmission)

  1. Ensure parking brake is applied
  2. Ensure gear lever is in neutral
  3. Check that gauges and warning lights are off
  4. Turn ignition key to "on" without starting
  5. Check warning lights and gauges for issues
  6. Apply choke if necessary
  7. Turn ignition key to start engine
  8. Release key as soon as engine starts
  9. Check warning lights and gauges again
  10. Cancel choke if applied

Note: Always ensure the vehicle is in neutral before starting.
